Points, Edges and Surfaces

Now that we have covered co-ordinate systems and the concept of axis in the previous section, let us look at how we define a three dimensional object. A point is just that, a single point in space. It has three co-ordinates along the x, y and z axis (athough we rarely have to deal with them in SketchUp, it is useful to understand this as a concept).

An edge is a line drawn between two points.

Exercise:

Ok, let's stretch those Google SketchUp legs.

  1. Open up SketchUp and click on the 'Pencil' tool.
  2. Click anywhere on the screen, now move the mouse around and you'll see the line drawn from the point you clicked earlier following you.
  3. Click again and the line is completed. (Hovering with your mouse over the ends of the line will show you a little green dot with a tool tip indicating that these are the end points.)
